There was no way we could let our blogs just sit and
rot, while we blamed everyone but ourselves for not writing. Deciding to
put an end to the hiatus on writing, me and Ishithaa have decided to
write on every day of November on alternate days. Today if the post is
on my page, tomorrow it will be on hers.....
I was bought up in a home where my parents were always "equals". There was no question of one leading the other - it was always a mutual give and take.
Yes, they have had their fights. Yes, they have raised their voices against each other! But the very idea of my mom giving up an argument just to soothe my dad's "Masculinity" is a thought that would make me fall on the ground and laugh! Maybe his "Masculinity" didn't wane away because he lost a argument with his wife.....
There was no task that was too "menial" for my dad - from helping out in the kitchen to polishing our shoes and even making our beds (oh we were a pampered lot!) to helping us with our homework - nothing was too big a task for his "Masculine" ego!
My mother was a working woman who has had an odd brush with "sexual harassment" at her workplace. We were teenage girls who have had a few "unpleasant incidents" traveling by public transport. Oh yes! we have also had our share of "Uncouth Boyfriends" (Well it’s a different matter that our father didn't think any man is good enough for his daughters). Every time, it seemed a very natural thing to discuss it out at home. No! I didn't see my dad flying into a rage - instead every time he would go and have a straight talk with the "offending party". And surprise! surprise! It seemed to work just fine! Maybe his "Masculinity" was more than about "boiling blood".....
We come from a family that's always been more on the "orthodox" side. But today when I am "old enough" to see the world - I realize we have had among our family-friends whom the "moral police" would term as "unsocial elements" - from unwed mothers to couples in "Live-in" relationships (remember that I am talking about a conservative Indian society two decades ago); but they were accepted without a blink of the eye. Maybe its that which has made us less judgmental today - maybe he was "masculine" enough to trust his family and not worry about "Unsavory influences"!
Maybe he was "Masculine" enough to realize that his "Masculinity" was beyond all this. And that truly is the best gift he has left behind for his daughters... When you have seen a gem of a role model in your dad, it gets very difficult to respect a man whose "Masculinity" is ruffled at the slightest of the pretext! May all men soon grow to be "Man enough" to accept strong Ladies.....
This post was influenced by yesterday's "SatyaMeva Jayate" episode on "Expression Of Masculinity"

In this post
written a good three years back, I grieved about not having a hand
written letter from my father... Here is an excerpt from the post...
Today when my dad is no more, all the memories I have are in my heart and may be a few pics that will speak for themselves. Isn’t it sad that my child will never have a chance of knowing him better especially considering what a beautiful writer my dad was........
But what I do have is this souvenir (this plank was stenciled and laminated by him) in which he had engraved the principle that truly governed his life and was a permanent resident at his office table! Today it endows my home, at a place where I set my eyes as soon as I wake up in the morning..... My Kitchen window. A good piece of wisdom to take in as I brew my cup of morning tea rt :)
This souvenir in indeed an inspiration for me... On worst of my days, I take a deep breath and read this aloud - The day suddenly seems more bearable.....

My Earliest Memory
My little girl – she looked most
beautiful and sprightly even as she thew another school-morning
tantrum while her mother struggled to tame her wild hair into neat
piggytails......
But a little later as she skipped away
happily, I knew my “Blue-Roses” have done their trick. So what
if it took a bit of scouting these “ladies stores” before I
zeroed down on these Rose shaped hair-bands that were the exact
shade of her uniform. Of course, the real trick was in convincing my
imp that the flowers indeed looked real and that roses can be blue ;)
So the DramaQueen of Richa tagged me to share my earliest memory... here u go gal :). The post is narrated from my daddy's perspective.... A daddy's gal all the way I am :-D. Indeed strange are the things our mind retains rt....
I am tagging another of my favorite DQs- Ishithaa! Am sure her story will be loaded with loads of drama... what else :-D

Why I write....
Honestly, The only writing I really do is on my blog here. Now if you scroll back right up to my first post, you will see it was written within a fortnight of my daddy's death! I was always a daddy's girl - his unexpected death shook me up in more ways than I could even comprehend then!
That fortnight, the house was full of friends and relatives. Though I agree they may mean well, howling my heart out in front of them wasn't really something I was comfortable with. I am one of those who cringes away from sympathies! So all I did was put up a brave facade n wait for the life to move on. But I hadn't even grieved properly n inside I was chipping away. Thus was born this blog - a place for all the emotional outlet!
Somehow writing(even if its on a unrelated topic) has a therapeutic effect on me and thus I began writing.....
This prompt is in response to WriteTribe prompt "Why I write"
Memoirs of a Home....
Now indulge me for a few moments n walk down this memory lane with me...
This story is set sometime in late 50s in God's own country - A grand old man who is on verge of retirement is on his annual visit to his native village. He was a official with Indian railways and so the railway quarters peppered across the county was his home for years now. But the rustic charms of his native village isnt where his heart was. He had in fact almost narrowed down on Cochin - debatably one of the most modern cities within Kerala.
So on this annual visit, he was making a courtesy call to one of the village elders. N this being the pre-industrialization era n stuff(well not tht things are v diff today), the visit entailed walking kms in the hot humid Kerala Heat! He walked n walked but soon the sun beating down was unbearable. He decided to take a"break" at the nearest sign of civilization - a old house set amidst the Paddy fields.
The entrance gate was v unassuming - a small rickety gate. It opened up into a long narrow "driveway" shaded with a canopy made of jasmine n other flowery creepers. Past the driveway, was this grand old house which thou seemed deserted. He took a sip of water from the well at the backyard - But so exhausted was the old man, that he decided to take a moment of rest at the courtyard. N then before he knew, the cool breeze coming from the paddy fields lulled him into a pleasant siesta. Only once he woke up, was he stuck by the beauty of the house - set strategically amidst the paddy fields, with a small stream running in between n house itself was surrounded by all kinds of vegetation! "Maybe this is home" - a sound within him said!
As luck would have it, the house was up for sale n that's the house my daddy called his "home" during his childhood n many years later! The grand old man was my grandfather.
What adds charm to this house to me is the story of how this house was built - The house was maybe 30-40 years old when my grandfather bought it. So the period am talking of must be early 20th century. The interesting tidbit here is that during those days, the teak wood used for construction was supposedly transported via water streams. They would be set up afloat from upstream from where they would float down n be collected from the appropriate points downstream. Elephants would then drag them all the way to the construction sites(Imagine elephants being used for mundane activities like building a house!)
N here's just the juiciest bit of gossip to spice it up - The house was originally built by by a paramour for his mistress! Now this paramour was a high ranking official who was commissioned to build a new house for his employer. So v conveniently his mistress house sprung up overnight right next to this "new house" - no prizes for guessing where the best of the teak ended up reaching :)
I unfortunately do not have a pic of the house to share with u as it was razed down a couple of years ago :-/
PS: the desc of the house is how I remember seeing it as a ten year old. I will dedicate this post to my uncle (dad's bro) who was the one who regaled us with this story n many more ... Indeed he is a master story teller !

spend the rest of forever with a hole inside you that couldn't be
filled?”

Daddy O' Daddy!
Thank you god for all you have done
For giving me a friend, the best under the sun
He guides me in whatever I do
Always with me filling my life with hue
He makes me laugh and makes me cry
With him around life is never dry
Sometimes he is someone who I really hate
Other times he is my very best mate
Life is crazy with him around
To him I am eternally bound
He can be the worst critic on his part
When he appreciates something, it comes from his heart
He is someone I will never understand-a complete enigma
His character and patience unchallengeable- hundred percent six sigma
He makes me happy and he makes me sad
But then I'll always be his lad
By best friend in the world
U guessed it, will always be my dad!!
This lines were penned by my husband a long time ago. But each word still resonates with truth today - a decade n more later. It must indeed speak of something abt a person who sticks to his ideals thru thick n thin of life! Selflessly helping others has been the motto he is lived thru his life - giving back to the society much more than what hes got, never being awed by problems, seeking new challenges daily - Qualities of a true leader or should I say of a true rotarian. You see ma FIL is now the president of one of the chapters of Rotary club in Chennai :-)

The Summer story!
The two weeks we were in hyd last month seemed almost a nightmare what with the increasing mercury levels and no AC to beat the bloody heat!
Rewind to a few year, na makes it a good 2 decades(man! am getting old) ~~ AC was a unimaginable luxury ~~Even the monstrous water cooler we had was a prized possession then! But but summers is where the best memories of my childhood are ~~ The long summer vacation spent at Kerala was jus the topping on the cake!
The house we were living in hyd then ~~ A "Match-Box" size apartment it was but the one luxury we had was bigger-than-the-bedroom open-air balcony n a huge terrace almost to ourselves. By late afternoons thou the balcony would be as good as live-burning-coals! Remember this was summers which meant water shortage which would mean lugging buckets of water to our first floor house(elevators at homes werent really heard of then!) ~~ Despite that come evening, the entire balcony is doused with buckets of water . The pleasure of sitting down in the balcony post this "water treatment" and catching up over evening tea as the cold evening air caress our faces ~~ Luxury! I hv quite a few memories of last minute cramming up for my exam siting right on that balcony.....
As night creeps in, there would be more-often-than-not a tussle for the prized-position under the water cooler. So one fine evening it was decided to ditch the cooler and mats were laid down back-back on the balcony with a few pillows popped in! Now imagine, A groups of cousin lying down next to each other, looking up to a sky full of stars n telling stories of far far away places...............
Indeed Old is gold!

While I do not have any pics of hyd to share what I could instead show you is a old pic of hubbs from his childhood days(the child on extreme left).. doesnt he look like a sweetheart here or is it a biased wife speaking :)

Two Weeks....
.... s at the home you bought up in has this humbling effect on you rt... it kinda rips off all airs that you have around you and all that you are left with is a craving to go back to those good old days when being daddys gal was the sure shot solution for every malady in life! Haaaa.....
Probably cause this was the longest time I spent there in the last 5 years and 2 weeks is enuf time to look back and reflect on all those growing up days. Indeed its this reflection that makes makes u realize that all is left of those days is memories and well things would never be the same again.
Esp when ma litt sis is on threshold of taking a huge leap in her life, this trip bought back all those bitter sweet memories ~~ of the daily cat fights that would often boil over to physical fights but again at blink of eye we stand united on the face of a mom breathing down our necks, of the first crushes, of the teeny-weeny thing who would climb up the balcony grill to chat up with the neighbors, of the not-so-little b'day gal who gobbles up the entire box of chocs sharing it with jus her best frnds(ignoring he rest), of the most consistent winner of the 'Most talkative kid', of 'the tantrum queen', of the gal who would be walking off in the opp direction even as the rest of the school kids would be walking in the direction of the school (and would then want us to believe that the school has declared a hol), who would sneak away the stick from her teachers desk every other day(!).
Indeed time flies....

Cloud Watching!
Cloud Watching ~~ Ho yes u read tht rt! N, no I dint mean sky watching ~~ 'Cloud Watching' is a v distinct, different hobby from 'Sky Watching'. Read on to know how I hit upon this pastime.........
When I was a child I firmly believed that people who die look down at us from the sky camouflaged as clouds ~~ courtesy my grandmother \my father(was it a ploy on their part to get us to shut our mouths for a while!). So there I was ~~ accompanied by ma sis ~~ up on the terrace trying to figure out as many shapes as we could. N discover shapes we did ~~ from people to animals to birds to dragons(ho yes!) to well u name it........ Lol!!
This is a habit that still catches me unawares ~~ So next time u c somebody peering closely at the morn sky nee the clouds, u know its yours truly :).
Look at this pic n c'mon put on ur thinking hats n start fishing out 'figures' in there....
I c a mouth-wide-open tortoise, A big fat cat, A crocodile, A fish, A lizard..........

Favouritism!
I hv been for last few weeks a regular fixture in front on TV when "Master Chef India" gets telecasted (Na na not cause of cooking.. But looking at well laid food is orgy in itself :)). Now in this season among the team of contestants my fav was one Mr. Puneeth ~~ if u hv been following this you'll agree that he isnt really the best of the lot there. But but possibly cause he was this rolly-polly uncle who seemed almost helpless ~~ Something in me rooted fro him(somewhere he reminds me of my daddy :-/). So each episode was more about "Will Puneeth get eliminated" than anything else!
But today post his elimination, for the first time I got to sit back, relax n enjoy the episode and see the best team win :)

Well u always knew tht Favouritism is a bad thing rt! But did you know tht when you start showing "favouritism", it always keeps you on the edge n neva lets u sit back n relax! Possibly jus common sense rt.... You wan your fav team to win n not the "May the best team win"!
So why this spl note on favouritism? Cause the above point jus drove into my mind in last few days.. Its transpires something like this..
But today post his elimination, for the first time I got to sit back, relax n enjoy the episode and see the best team win :)

Walking down the memmory lane with daddy....One of my first memmories
Was casually browsing thru a few blogs by other bloggers n a post that really had me hooked was one where a girl recollects all her childhood memories (unfortunately I have lost the link of that blog)....n this inspired me to write a post of my own childhood days.....
Well I hardly remember anything till I am 5 or so thou a few of them are etched in my memory thanx to my cousins who still have a whale of time repeating it every time we meet up.....they(i.e. the stories n cousins) will be another post!
The first memory I have is of the time when I must have been like 3 or 4 years and in my kindergarten. N in those days it was my daddy who would do all my shopping (down to the smallest things...funny hey esp considering that it went on till I was in my late teens!!!). So daddy picks up this hair clip for me (do not really remember if it was he who bought it!) which resembles a flower (Blue\pink??) One fine day I get ready to school with this hair clip n all.....n as soon as daddy sees me in it, he exclaims "Ho! it looks so beautiful....almost like u have a real rose in your hair!!!" N thou now I think its silly but then I was so happy n thrilled (that I remember it to this day)........
In a way this incident encompasses my entire childhood as I remember it.....a v sweet n loving daddy who was always there for me like a pillar, who would play the fool to cheer me up, who would pamper me silly, who would support me despite all my mistakes, who patiently taught me math n to whom i owe my love for reading n writing, who would drink up my milk for me (to save me from mummy's wrath), who would get me chocolates everyday (even after i was all grown up n working), who would wait up for me till late in the nights (even on those days when I return from work at 2 or 3 in the night)...But as they say u do not realize the worth of a person till he is around!! N now when my daddy is gone, I miss him like mad...miss the warmth, comfort n the confidence that was always taken for granted!!! Love u daddy.........
